Kalank box office collection Day 1: Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt film gets a bumper opening
Karan Johar’s magnum opus, starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur, has emerged as the biggest opener of 2019 so far. Directed by Abhishek Varman, Kalank is a period drama.
if Karan Johar is bringing a big-budget film with six known Bollywood stars in the lead, one can expect mass hysteria. And that’s what exactly happened on the opening day of Kalank. Abhishek Varman’s period drama has emerged as the biggest opener of 2019 so far, beating the opening day record of Akshay Kumar’s Kesari.
Kalank has made Rs 21.6 crore on its opening day. With more than 40 per cent occupancy, the multi-starrer has struck gold at the box office on first day of its release.
Akshay Kumar’s Kesari has made Rs 21.06 crore on its opening day, and Kalank beat that record.
With a screen count of 4000, Kalank is one of the biggest releases of 2019. The film is a period drama set in pre-independent India that takes you back in time with intricately interwoven stories of six characters who are connected by love and revenge.
However, the slow pace of Kalank is its major drawback. India Today critic Ananya Bhattacharya slammed the film for being a yawnfest. Giving the film 2 out of 5 stars, she wrote in her review, “Kalank is painful. Not in a good, cinematic, cathartic type of way. It is just physically painful to get through the near-three-hour film and reach the end without wanting to walk out of the theatre. The only redemption in this mind-numbingly boring tale of star-crossed love is the performance by the lead actors. The film has a top class cast that director Abhishek Varman fails to make much of.”
Kalank brings together two of Bollywood most-popular on-screen jodis – Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt.
It is after a gap of 22 years that Sanjay and Madhuri will be seen together in a film. Talking about the experience of working together after two decades, Sanjay Dutt said, “It was great to work with her again. I was a little nervous, but she made things easy. She’s got terrific command as an actor. We spoke about our kids. In fact, I made my children [Shahraan and Iqra] meet her when they dropped by on the sets.”
Apart from them, Kalank also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunal Kemmu.
